KILGAR IN OZ FOR A FEW CONTESTS AND CHECK SOME GOLD COAST SPOTS.
Recently Sundance Beach pioneer Kilian Garland set off for an Australia Surf Trip for a few weeks to compete in 3 different WSL contests and enjoy some of the amazing surf that El Niño has recently brought. He was signed up for 3 different contests to gain some QS points including the WSL 1000 Kommunity Great Lakes Pro, Newcastle Surfest Pro, Australian Open of Surfing at Manly. In his downtime Kilgar and friends were able to cruise to the Gold Coast and score the Cyclone Winston swell which is up for an El Niño award and being dubbed the “Swell of the Season”. Kilian sent us a quick travel log of his recent excursion down under. Check it out!
Airshow over Newcastle
My first stop was Stockton Beach near Newcastle. I watched a surf club team challenge and a really cool airshow.
Here I am checking Boomerang Beach, the site for the WSL 1000 Kommunity Great Lakes Pro. This beach offers a ton of fun peaks and a slingshot right hander on one end.
One day while the comp was off Johnny Norris, Skip Mccullough, Leandro Usuna, Manuel Selman Nico Vargas and I all ventutred off into the bush. We hiked down a trail for about a quarter mile on what seemed like a Disney land themed Boardwalk. We found a cool beach called Cellito. It was a little maxed out but we still had fun. We switched off taking photos with the camera. Thanks Johnny Norris for the pics!
During the Newcastle Surfest Pro a swell from Cyclone Winston showed up on the maps. We all lost in the comp so we made a call to drive to the Goldy. We woke up at 3:30 am and drove straight there. The car we were in got a little over heated. As we got to Coolangatta the ride started smoking and barely coasted in.
This is halfway down the Superbank. It is hard to see the whole lineup from most places but right here at Greenmount you get a good view. It is a mind bender how far the wave breaks
It has got to be one of the fastest waves around and sometimes you can still get a window with a mellow crowd. The current is so strong it sometimes washes everyone past the take off spot. The beach is really nice and at the top it has a nice grassy field.
Sunset at Snapper
One last wave from Snapper as the sun was setting. This was a clean face snapper wall before hitting the inside. This day the swell pumped all day from Cyclone Winston and by the late evening the crowd had diminished to just a few.
During the Australian Open I stayed with a friend Cristo Hall right on the beach in Narrabeen. The wave here is really fun. The area has some incredible surfers.

All together my trip to Aus was awesome. I got to meet some rad people and made some great memories. I went there to get contest results but unfortunately they never really came through. I hope to make it back again soon though. I’d like to do better in the events and wouldn’t mind getting some more great waves!
Big THANKS to Sundance Beach for helping out with everything as well as the rest of my sponsors.
