Vans was one of the first companies in the action sports industry to utilize like-minded artists and musicians to extend the brand’s reach and influence on youth culture. For 2015, Vans has enlisted Maui artist Gregg Kaplan to add an aloha flair to the Spring line of surfwear and footwear.
Kaplan’s roots in Maui run deep. His family is surf through and through and don’t fall short in the creative department either. But it’s his keen interest in the beauty of Hawaii and it’s rich culture that inspires him. His art blends nostalgic Hawaiiana with modern style through the use of a combination of techniques. His signature linocut and block-cut styles can be found on paintings, drawings, and textiles. Kaplan also was commissioned by Vans to do all of the artwork for last fall’s Vans Triple Crown of Surfing!
For men’s apparel, Vans x Gregg Kaplan collection offers the Gregg Kaplan Boardshort, which features Tri-Blend for a vintage look, the Loco Moco Pocket Tank, the Fauna Pocket Tee, Shave Ice Pocket Tee, and the Kaplan Bucket Hat, all settling in somewhere between artfully drawn flower and leaf shapes and subdued, tone-on-tone hues and carefully applied color pops.
