Santa Barbara’s Lakey Peterson has proven to be the one to watch at the 2015 Swatch Women’s Pro at Trestles. The regular-foot has been on a tear throughout the event and advanced to the semi-finals after Saturday’s quarter-final win over current Jeep Rankings Leader Courtney Conlogue.
After Peterson dropped the first 9-point ride of the day in Round 4 for a convincing win over Hawaii’s Tatiana Weston-Webb, the Hurley team rider was up against the most powerful female surfer in the world in her quarters match up against Conlogue. The heat had plenty of hype surrounding it with Conlogue’s recent tour dominance and Peterson’s building momentum taking center stage in one of the most talked about heats of the day.
Lakey Peterson has been living in San Clemente for a few summers now and used her mastery of the Lowers lineup to rattle Conlogue after posting a solid 8.93 on her first wave of the heat. Lakey matched power for power with Conlogue, but added a bit more flare to her turns. Her second turn on that 8.93 was one of the best in the entire event so far mixing critical precision with speed and flow. Courtney had opportunities on a few set waves but couldn’t capitalize. The Huntington Beach local found an overhead wall in the last two minutes, but failed to complete the final maneuver, giving Lakey the victory.
This marks the second year in a row that Peterson has knocked out the World Tour rankings leader at Trestles. Last year, Peterson defeated Carissa Moore, who at the time was reigning World Champion and ratings leader. Moore would lose the yellow jersey after the loss and end up losing the World Title to Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore. Ironically, Peterson’s quarter-final win over Courtney gave Moore the opportunity to overtake Conlogue for the rankings lead. Moore defeated Tyler Wright in a close battle in the next heat and now wears the yellow jersey headed into the European leg of the tour.
Peterson takes on South Africa’s Bianca Buitendtag in semi-final #1 when competition resumes. A new SW swell is forecasted to arrive as early as Wednesday and could see heats underway for an amazing Final Day of action. Watch the webcast LIVE on worldsurfleague.com
