Super typhoon Nuri delivered the first shot of XXL swell to Maui for the 2015 winter season yesterday. On November 11th big wave chargers, including superstar hell man Shane Dorian and South African Big Wave World Champ Grant “Twiggy” Baker, dusted off their 11 foot guns and descended on the infamous big wave break Jaws along the northern coast of Maui, Hawaii.
According to Twig the waves were larger than forecast, and what was expected to be a warm up paddle session for the upcoming El Nino winter produced several entries to the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave awards. “Couple bombs at Pe’ahi yesterday. We thought it was going to be a warmup day but ended up seeing a few 25ft sets!” said Baker.
Shane Dorian stroked into this bomb and casually rode to the safety of the channel, making it look easy while earning a Ride of the Year entry and a shot at the $50k grand prize.
It wasn’t all fun and games, however, watch as Nic Vaughan of Rancho Palos Verdes loses his footing and skips down the face of a Jaws monster.
