First Round Completed at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach!

Big Scores and Major Upsets as New Swell Fills in on Day 3

Screen-shot-2013-03-26-at-13.26.59The opening round of the 51st annual Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach was completed yesterday in head high surf. The first 4 heats of the round were held at The Bowl, while the latter heats of the day moved up to the Rincon section of the lengthy Bells lineup.

Although the perennial ASP World Title contenders continued to dominate throughout the day, there were a few upsets in the tricky conditions.

Parko was smooth as silk in his Round 1 heat, easily eliminating Brett Simpson and Wildcard Jack Perry.

Future World Title contender Gabriel Medina showed up late for the first heat of the morning and never found a rhythm during the 30 minute affair. In turn, Raoni Monteiro looked refreshed and in form as he sliced and diced his way down the point for the win.

World Title hopeful Taj Burrow seemed a bit flustered in his Round 1 heat as an on-fire Willian Cardoso lit up the point and advanced to Round 3, forcing Taj to enter a Round 2 elimination heat.

Top Seeds Kelly Slater, Joel Parkinson, and Mick Fanning all advanced straight to Round 3 rather convincingly, each posting impressive heat scores in the opening round.

Kelly Slater looked better than ever on his 5'9" CI Wierdo Ripper, slicing and dicing his way through the lineup with perfect rail carves and vicious snaps.

Josh Kerr posted a solid win with above-the-lip moves like this 360 no-grab punt.

But it was the rookies Nat Young and Filipe Toledo, along with ASP World Tour sophmore Kolohe Andino who thrilled the crowd with incredible aerials and solid power surfing. Young snagged a dramatic last minute win with a searing backhand assault on a solid set wave. Toledo pulled a 360 air and then a Kerrupt Flip on the same wave and was the crowd favorite for the day. Andino pulled the highest, and most inverted 360 full rotation air of the day for a huge score and advanced straight into Round 3.

Kolohe Andino pulled the maneuver of the day after landing this huge, inverted, full rotation 360 air. It was Kolohe's first ever Round 1 victory!
