Be My Valentine? A Guy's Guide!

What is Valentine’s Day? It’s history is really masked in mystery. However, we do know one thing: February has long been a month of romance…If you have a Valentine. St. Valentine’s Day comprised of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. So…Who was this famous Saint Valentine and how did he get to be so lucky to have this ancient rite?

Here’s the mystery: The Catholic Church recognizes at least one, two, THREE different saints that were named Valentine (or Valentinus). One legend argues that Valentine was a priest who aided in Rome during the 3rd century. Emperor Claudius II determined that soldiers performed better single, solo, stag, or however you prefer to term it, and forbade marriage for young men. Valentine did not approve of this and defied Claudius by continuing to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. However, Valentine’s secret actions were eventually exposed, and grumpy old Claudius sentenced him to death.

There are some other stories as well, saying that Valentine may have been killed for trying to help Christians flee ruthless Roman prisons where they often beaten and tortured. But, we’re going to go with the romantic story!

While romantic Valentine was in prison, it is believed that he fell in love with a young girl that would visit him during his confinement. Before his death, sentenced by Claudius, Valentine wrote her a letter, which he signed “From your Valentine,” marking the first sent Valentine greeting and an expression that is still used today every February 14th.

The truth behind the Valentine legend is cloudy. However, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated ONE BILLION Valentine cards are received every year, creating Valentine’s Day the second biggest card-sending holiday of the year!!
