While the Triple Crown of Surfing is considered “the circus” by the locals, the Volcom Pipeline Pro is the feel good contest of the North Shore. Featuring a stacked heat draw of the world’s best Pipeline surfers, ASP World Tour standouts, and WQS warriors eager for a good start in 2013, the Volcom Pipe Pro is indeed the stage to crown the best surfer at one of the heaviest waves on the planet.

And it seems the surf gods have been kind to the event, with the last two years seeing some of the best Pipeline size and conditions of the entire season! Last year’s final featured an epic showdown between Pipeline’s most favorite sons, Jamie O’Brien and John John Florence. After Jamie took a lead in the first few minutes with two incredible waves posting a 9.00 and a 9.43. Florence was out of the picture with two low scores until, with only 5 minutes left, a 6-8 foot set rolled in. Florence got the first one and went left, got a deep barrel, and then spat out at the end for a perfect 10. Jamie swung around and caught the next Backdoor barrel of the set for a 9.93 to extend the lead. With only 40 seconds left, Florence was congratulating O’Brien on the victory when suddenly a sneaker set marched over the outer reefs. Without even thinking about it, Florence out-paddled O’Brien to get in position for the left, then turned and went right. The score was a 9.93, giving John John the lead and one of the sweetest wins in ASP history!

The Volcom Pipe Pro is an extra special event for the local Hawaiian competitors, being that it is a chance for non-World Tour surfers to gain entry into the prestigious Billabong Pipe Masters. The top eight Hawaiian competitors in the Volcom Pipe Pro will be rewarded with local seeds into the 2013 event, which is part of the Triple Crown series and wraps up the tour for the year.

The forecast for 2013 looks intense, with no less than three huge NW swells to slam into the North Shore during the 12 day waiting period.

The event is also an Eco-Friendly contest. “In line with Volcom’s New Future commitment, the event will again run according to the green guidelines that SustainableSurf.org and ASP North America have partnered on to help reduce the environmental impact of all contests. This will be Volcom’s second deep blue surfing event™ and in line with the guidelines, waste, energy, community support, climate change and transportation will be target categories for sustainability initiatives.”

This year is setting up to be another banger of a contest with Pipeline doing its thing for three weeks straight leading up to the event. Looking at the official Surfline forecast, there are no less than three 8-12ft (Hawaiian scale) swells scheduled to hit the region during the 12 day waiting period. Contest organizers will pick and choose the best conditions out of the twelve days to run the three day event.

Check out the first call for the Volcom contest live on Sunday, January 27th, at 7:30am HST.
